Understanding debt

I was listening to the PBS News Hour a couple of days ago; they were having a debate between a mid-level Republican congressman and Democratic Rep. James Clyburn from South Carolina. After listening to the Republican speak about the impending vote on raising the debt ceiling, Clyburn commented that the American people dont understand what this is about, that they will feel differently if they know this is not about future spending, but about making good on debt we have already taken. I think he is wrong. We do understand, largely because so many of us have been there in our own lives. When we max out our credit cards, bump up against our personal debt ceilings, and then suddenly realize we cant make our monthly payments, we have two choices. We can lower our use of the A/C, cut back on premium cable, make do with last years styles and forgo the summer vacation; or we can try to open some new credit cards and use cash advances to make the minimum payment on the maxed out cards we cant pay now.

It doesnt take a massive public education initiative to teach the American people which of those two choices is the right one. No, we do not want our nations credit rating to fall from missing obligations on debt any more than we want our own score to drop precipitously when we are late on payments. But, even more so, we dont want our leaders taking any more “credit card advances” to service the debt. Yes the choices are tough, and you are having trouble agreeing on new taxes versus unpopular cuts.

Dishonorable cause

I am writing in response to the June 3 letter writer who took Marc Murphy to task for his cartoon relating to the Confederate battle flag on Kentucky license plates. The letter writer seems confused as to the basis of the Civil War for those in the Confederacy.

The Courier-Journal would do a great service to its readers to print the Mississippi Declaration of Secession verbatim, as it clearly lays out the reasons for secession (if not, its easy enough to find on the Internet). Its breathtaking honesty reveals that these people chose secession over abolition. Simply put, they loved the “institution” of slavery more than they loved the United States of America.
